Do you like books? Real paper books ? This is our Do you like books? Real paper books ? This is our library and guests are invited to borrow a book during their stay. We have 2 shelves of children’s books! Plus lots of Italy themed books and Italian cookbooks.
It’s #worldbookday today. Let’s encourage children ( well actually everyone) to read or look at picture books, to see the world through the author’s eyes. We read to make sense of the world we live in, to better understand each other, to capture all sorts of human experiences.
‘ one of the central tools of literature is using the lie of a made up story to tell a human truth’ ( Neil Gaiman)
I love this quote.

The promise of a seasonal change, although the summer didn’t want to let go this year.
Thank you to all our lovely guests who visited this summer. Next year we are accepting September rentals.
August is half booked already. Drop me an email at debby@casamontalto.com to enquire.
Buon ferragosta ! Italian August bank holiday toda Buon ferragosta ! Italian August bank holiday today and it’s scorching hot. It’s traditional to eat a very big lunch but personally I’d rather eat fruit and wallow in the pool.
We just welcomed a group of Italian guests and this is their first view of the house.

Really really really hoping to welcome guests old Really really really hoping to welcome guests old and new this summer. You’ll always have the whole house and gardens all to yourselves and from this side of the house you can overlook our 300 and something ( lost count 😂) olive trees. Some of our 2020 cold pressed olive oil is always left in the kitchen for you!
We’ve started working in the gardens ( spot the wheelbarrow) but the blue skies have gone for a few days of icy cold weather.
If there’s anything you’d like to know about the house, Le Marche, our booking conditions in the light of the present situation or whatever else, then please email me on debby@casamontalto.com.
Buon fine settimana. 😘

Even after 15 years of pain stakingly picking our Even after 15 years of pain stakingly picking our olives and waiting 4 hours at the local olive mill there is a buzz of excitement at the first tasting. As it runs out of the final machine into our canister the heady aroma is both pungent and reminds me of fresh mown grass. It’s piquant in taste and makes you cough when it hits the back of your throat.

Have u ever tried fresh cold pressed olive oil?
Full of antioxidants. Food at its very best.
50 litres of precious oil stored in our cantina. Check stories for more info and pics.

When to start picking is the big ? There aren’t loads this year but 🤞for enough gorgeous fresh olive oil for us and family and for our special guests ...
We are learning about olive farming and with our newish field of 300 trees will produce enough cold pressed evo to sell in the future.
Hope you appreciate my cute cat pic ? Warmest wishes to you all.😘
Still discovering Le Marche. It’s hidden gems li Still discovering Le Marche. It’s hidden gems like this waterfall where we swam in the fresh cold natural pool, below rushing water. Magical.

Already had lots of 2021 bookings and all guests who have been before and booked direct. It’s the best way. Why pay more with companies like Homeaway and Airbnb?

An hours scenic drive and you reach Devil’s Gorg An hours scenic drive and you reach Devil’s Gorge where you literally walk through a natural gap in the mountains following the path of rushing water. A fun walk for kids too as the scrambling up rocky paths and across bridges feel like a mini adventure. Then walking through the final gap in the rocks to a magical path along the rushing stream. In the summer months we’re more mountain than beach folks( luckily we have both here) How about you ?

Our 1930s front door. The same one we all entered Our 1930s front door. The same one we all entered the house through for the first time 16 years ago. It’s seen many comings and goings and witnessed the shenanigans of family life as well as the welcoming and farewells of 100s of guests. We look forward to welcoming many more visitors through this door. We’re taking things slowly this summer with gaps between bookings to ensure proper preparation of the house. Using the opportunity to rethink what we can offer visitors in the future. We like the idea of full immersion weeks of mixing activities such as olive picking and pressing with cooking local foods. Exploring Local wineries, landscape and mountains discovery trips out. What would be in your ideal Le Marche experience? We’d love to know 😉
One of my lockdown sourdough loaves. I ran out of One of my lockdown sourdough loaves. I ran out of yeast and used the opportunity to master the art and rhythm of naturally leavened bread. It has given me a deep sense of satisfaction putting this daily bread on the table. This week has been #mentalhealthawareness week and if you’re interested please read up on @vanessakimbell and her research on fermented bread and how it aids both gut and mental health. So much to learn about the connection between food and health. I know personally that baking, foraging, creating meals helps me deal with things and gives me headspace. Wishing you a great weekend. Check out my stories for more bread stuff. I have to thank @labibioteca for igniting my sourdough journey 😘
What’s your favourite Italy themed book ? We hav What’s your favourite Italy themed book ? We have a new library room full of books, including lots of fiction and biography set in Italy. Scroll through to see a few of my personal favourites. We added a reading nook perfect for browsing through guidebooks on our region of Le Marche. And suddenly there was an explosion of roses. Cand And suddenly there was an explosion of roses. Candy floss pink flowers cascading over arches, reminding me that soon Spring will break into summer. Time marches on regardless of what is happening in the world outside Casa Montalto. Taking things week by week as Italy slowly starts up again. 😘
I’m becoming a twitcher 😆 Every morning I wal I’m becoming a twitcher 😆
Every morning I walk stealthily through this gate towards the old ruin, where a family of kestrels live. I hear their calls first then see them swoop down to the pigeon holes under the roof or fly across our open valley like distant kites. They have nested here for years. All is still, the sky is spring blue and the air is crisp with a hint of warmth. I am grateful for the rush of Spring. I am grateful for the lovely comments from past guests and hopefully future ones. 🙏
See stories for kestrel pics and take care x
